A Few Hints on Cleaning Free Space on a Mac Device. December 07, 2017. One of the main reasons why a Mac runs slowly is insufficient free space on its hard drive. In this guide, we provide six useful tips on how to clean your device. There are few tips that you can do on your own to fix the sad situation when your Mac’s performance suffers from the lack of free space.
This step is very important in case you don’t want to lose any crucial data while cleaning your Mac. It helps you to protect any files and folders you may accidentally remove. For this task, you may use a flash disk or portable hard drive. Some users even record their all-time important data on DVDs and CDs. Modern solutions offer something even cooler. Use a special online backup service such as iCloud or Dropbox.
Empty your trash bin
This is, actually, the first cleaning step you should do. It may seem too obvious, but still, lots of Mac users ignore Mac’s trash bin and keep it loaded with gigabytes of junk files and folders. So, once again let us remind you that after you deleted a file or a folder, it doesn’t disappear without a trace. Actually, it goes to your Trash folder and stays there until you clean it up. Till those files stay in Trash, they still consume hard disk space. Just right-click on your Trash icon and press Empty Trash button.
Archive files that you do not use too often
This is an ultimate manual task. You need to identify files and folders you don’t use regularly. It will take time, so be prepared to spend some. It is about gathering the stuff you don’t use regularly into one archive file. It will compress those files, so they take less space on your Mac hard disk. It may be folders, pictures, music, .iso files, etc. also, some users prefer to burn a CD or DVD as a backup for those files. When there will be needed, you just can delete the original file from your Mac to get more free hard disk space urgently. Then you can copy that archive back on your hard drive.
Uninstall unused applications
Sometimes, we don’t even realize how much applications there are installed on our Macs. And we often don’t use even half of them! So why do you keep them there in your system? Some of those applications consume too much space and other resources. That is why the entire System works slower than it should. Just uninstall unused programs. Access Applications section on your Mac and move all those unused apps into the Trash. And don’t forget to empty the trash bin after deleting those files.
Use a cleaning up program
Well, now you know how to clean Mac hard drive. But this is just one way of making it, and it’s not, actually, the easiest and fastest one. While you can spend all day cleaning your Mac hard drive manually, you also can install a special cleaning program. MacFly Pro, for example, is a perfect match for this task. It is light and fast. The app consumes fewer resources than it may seem. Just press Scan to identify all the problematic areas and fix the problem with deleting unused data, apps, and junk.
Conclusion
As you see, you’re not limited to just one way of cleaning your Mac hard drive. But if you don’t have enough time or skills to do it manually, you should really try MacFly Pro or something like that. Just find the app you would like. Access its official website and download the installation file. Get your subscription or try a trial version, if it is available.
Getting frustrated with my slow iMac will get me nowhere. The initial reaction if the iMac is slow is that I delete a couple of applications and software to widen its memory space; however, that would never solve the problem. There are still a few hidden data and applications inside my iMac that is still hogging the disk space. They should be manually removed so that my iMac runs in a smooth condition, or simplify the jobs with the iMac cleaner.
Some applications automatically (or when asked) set themselves as a 'startup item', which causes them to open at every restart or login. You can find out what is in your startup items list by navigating to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items. You may be surprised at how many there are. To remove them, simply select the item by clicking on its name and then hit the 'minus' button at the bottom of the list. However, be sure that you know what you're removing; otherwise, you may kill some critical function for the next time you restart.
While System Preferences is open, take a look at a few other things. Apple has generously included a number of very useful features as preferences. Some, however, may not be useful to you, such as Universal Access (which offers help for visually and hearing impaired users) or Bluetooth (which allows certain devices to be used wirelessly). If you don't use these features, verify that they are turned off. This will save you some valuable RAM and processor resources.

There may be other things hogging your processor's attention or sucking up RAM. How will you know about them? By using Apple's Activity Monitor, which comes with Mac OS X. Activity Monitor will tell you about CPU usage, RAM requirements, virtual memory usage, and whether a given application is a PowerPC or Intel (Universal) build. Check it occasionally to see if there are any red flags - or keep it running for a few days (with one of the useful Dock icons or floating windows enabled) to keep an eye on when things are spiking.
It doesn't matter how large your hard drive is - eventually it will begin to fill up. Whether it is a huge iPhoto library, some videos you're editing, or simply an accumulation of lots of 'stuff', a full hard drive can cause problems. (One colleague couldn't figure out why her drive was so full - until she realized that she hadn't emptied her Trash in almost four years!) You may not realize that Mac OS X (and the Classic Mac OS, too) uses the free space on your hard drive as 'virtual memory', and it depends heavily on that virtual memory to run efficiently. If you're starting to feel sluggish, it may be because your drive is too full.
